Civil Engineering


     The department is fully equipped with high quality laboratories and workshops that cover all aspects of civil engineering. These laboratories and workshops are subjected to a continuous updating to keep pace with the latest technology requirements.

     Laboratory plays an extremely important role in Civil engineering education. The undergraduate courses are supplemented with an extensive laboratory work in order to furnish the student with a sufficient experimental experience in various fields of Civil engineering through the use of the most modern techniques of measurements, instrumentations and analysis.

These include:

  • Structural and Materials Lab.
  • Environmental Engineering Lab.
  • Surveying lab
  • Highway Engineering Lab.
  • Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics Lab.
  • Geotechnical Engineering Lab.



   Environmental Engineering Laboratories are one of the most important laboratories of the Civil Engineering Department, where bachelor and graduate students perform experiments and lab work required by environmental engineering courses, and research work of their final projects. The labs also serve the faculty members of the environmental engineering specialty to carry out their research projects. The laboratories compose modern and technically advanced instruments needed for water, wastewater and air quality, and noise level analyzes. The labs have also many in-situ devices and equipments to perform different types of measurements and to take grab and composite water, wastewater, soil and air samples.



    The Surveying Laboratory enables students to understand the basic principles of surveying by conducting field exercises using surveying equipment like

Aluminium Level Staff
• Metallic Tape
• Metal Arrows
• Measuring chain
• Ranging Rod

     Most of the field exercises are conducted outside the laboratory room to gather field survey data using state-of-the-art surveying equipment. Reduction and calculation of the field data for final results are performed in the laboratory room. All lab sections are prepared for student training classes in surveying section and civil engineering department, graduation projects, as well as graduate and post graduate researches by staff members. It could be also used for general surveying training courses for the public.


   In hydraulics laboratory there is a range of experimental set-ups through which students are given a very good demonstration to understand the various methods of measurement of flow rates, capacity & velocity of water in tanks, closed pipes and open channels. In addition, in this laboratory, students get an experience to understand the fluid properties like surface tension, temperature, viscosity and they get a practical experience of measurement of these properties, which are very important for the selection of pumps, pipes and its specifications like material, size & slope. It is quite useful for design of drainage channels and open channel. By using the experimental set-ups like losses through closed pipes, flow through orifice meter, flow through venturimeter or flow in open channels, we get the coefficient of various parameters like discharge, velocity etc.



   Structures and Concrete Laboratories provide assistance in performing academic programs for students and faculty research, public establishments and private sectors. IN structural lab Student studies about concrete and various material properties. It is equipped with modern machines to test plain and reinforced concrete elements, masonry wall panels and structural steel specimens up to full size. The testing can be performed using either load or deformation controlled rate of loading. Dynamic and fatigue tests are also carried out in the lab Adjacent to the structural lab area is provided, for the casting and curing of concrete specimens. The lab is equipped with concrete mixers of various capacities. Currently, the laboratories are extensively involved in testing, repairing and strengthening reinforced concrete elements and frames. Also, a lot of emphasis is given to the durability studies conducted on concrete and other repair materials.



   Transportation lab consists of equipments used in the testing of bituminous material such as viscosity, ductility and plasticity and other devices for Super pave testing of bitumen and aggregate. There are other devices for mix design by both Super pave and Marshall Methods. Transportation lab provides and helps in performing all tests for under and past graduated students and staff research.
