INTRODUCTION
“Education through Service” is the purpose of NSS, and one of the essential services rendered by our group of 50 NSS volunteers, along with two program officers and two program coordinators, is disseminating information about the latest developments in agriculture, watershed management, wasteland development, non-conventional energy, sanitation, nutrition, and personal hygiene. They also focus on employment opportunities, awareness on water harvesting, refurbishing school buildings, organizing camps to scrutinize people's eye vision, conducting dental health checkups, veterinary medical camps, removal of plastic waste from temples, cleaning and maintenance in the hotspots of the village etc. The NSS volunteers of SSEC lived with the members of the community during the 6-day special camping program and learnt from their experiences during their tenure in the camp.
The students were motivated by the Programme officers and enthusiastically helped the local community in launching a number of programmes like sanitation drive, adult primary education, health projects like immunization, first aid centre, child care, nutrition classes and also helped in forming youth clubs, children’s group, organizing career guidance with their full commitment and integrity. The Forest and Health departments of the government rendered their assistance to the project pertaining to community work.
Working in close collaboration with the agencies helped the NSS Volunteers in understanding the problems of a vulnerable section of the society. NSS Volunteers were instructed to develop a sense of belonging and respect for the people with whom they worked.
Before drawing up the plan of action, the students conducted a comprehensive survey of the village. Conducting a socio-economic survey is an interesting field activity which has direct bearing on the curriculum of economics.
